Challenge

Design a measuring tool for the kitchen. Design the new object with a mindset that encompasses the lifecycle of objects beyond just the interaction of a user with that object, looking at manufacturing techniques, material, material sourcing, energy harvesting, end of life, durability, joy of use. Use the practices around sustainable computing to be the centerpiece of your emerging technology artifact.

Solution

(Ongoing project) The current solution focuses on slow tracking of food nutritions and only notify the user when necessary. This reduces carbon footprint from computing and keep the user from being bombarded by notifications.

Takeaway

Sustainable computing

The old mindset of designing electronics and software emphasizes the need for consumers to receive constant notifications. However, the overwhelming number of alerts from various sources ultimately means we end up ignoring most of them. Addressing this information overload can also enhance sustainability within the IoT industry. For instance, it's often unnecessary to continuously transfer data between devices if a user only needs periodic reports. Additionally, data transfers and processing can be timed to occur when energy sources are cleaner, further reducing environmental impact.
